Diagnostic Measurements of a Highly Ionized, Steady-state Plasma

This paper is primarily intended to give an account of a few of the diagnostic techniques that have been applied to a highly ionized, steady-state helium plasma at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. However, to establish a proper perspective it will first be well to describe briefly the system in which the plasma is generated and studied.

BEFCYF And DBDT: IBM 704 Codes For Preparing Input For Bevatron Orbit Code (BOC)

Two IBM-704 codes have been written which are auxiliary to the Bevatron orbit code BOC. The first, BEFCYF, interpolates among tabulated values of the median-plane magnetic flux density of the Bevatron to produce an equivalent array of values in a form appropriate to BOC. The second, DBDT, produces azimuthal derivatives of the fields produced by BEFCYF. The internal operation of BEFCYF and DBDT is described, and instructions for their execution are given.

High Velocity Shock Testing, Equipment and Methods

The need for special high velocity shock testing is pointed out and equipment that has been developed to meet these needs is discussed. The concept of velocity-change and its importance in shock-testing technology is brought out. The three types of equipment discussed are: accelerated drop testers, pneumatic actuators, and air guns. Examples of each type and their capabilities and limitations are presented.

Microwave Diagnostic Systems and Techniques for Use in Controlled Fusion Research

Abstract: "Microwaves have been used for several years at Lawrence Radiation Laboratory to study conditions in the magnetically contained plasmas of controlled fusion research. There are two basic microwave techniques. One gives information on electron density and distribution in the plasma, the other provides data on electron temperature. This paper briefly summarizes the established techniques, discusses engineering requirements and limitations, and describes some further applications of microwaves presently being considered."

DECONTAMINATION TESTING OF HIGHLY CONTAMINATED PROTECTIVE COATINGS (open access)

DECONTAMINATION TESTING OF HIGHLY CONTAMINATED PROTECTIVE COATINGS

Decontaminability measurements of 34 protective coatings (primarily vinyls and epoxies) and 10 comparative control surfaces (metals, glass, and plastics) highly contaminated with either mixed fission products from typical Purex waste or Oak Ridge National Laboratory Thorex waste did not indicate any unusual improvement over coatings tested in 1950 (AECD-2296). These measurements and chemical rcsistance tests were made of the protective coatings in common acids, alkalis, and deionized water at 81 and 120 deg F as a guide in the selection of coatings for radiochemical plant applications and to determine if coatings containing water vehicles could be substituted for coatings containing more hazardous organic solvent vehicles. Vinyl base coatings were superior in both decontaminability and chemical resistance. The two watervehicle coatings evaluated were markedly inferior to organic-vehicle vinyls. A vinyl wallpaper'' was decontaminated poorly with the reagents used. Water and 3M HNO/sub 3/ removed Purex contaminants relatively efficiently but were relatively ineffective for the removal of Thorex contaminants. Coatings determined to be sufficiently decontaminated from Purex waste by a water flush and acid scrub and to be of superior resistance to common acids and alkalis are given. (auth)

Chemical Technology Division, Chemical Development Section C Progress Report for April-May 1960

An economical process was successfully demonstrated in bench-scale continuous equipment for stripping U from amines with ammonium carbonate solution. A continuous countercurrent mixer-settler extraction system was set up for further testing of the process for recovery of Te, Np, and U by tertiary amine extraction from UF/sub 6/ transfer cylinder was solutions. The effect of Purex aqueous feed adjustment procedures on Pu extraction by 1 M di-secbutyl phenylphosphonate (DSBPP) was studied. Work was continued on plutonium(IV) nitrate extraction with TBP and phenylphosphonate esters. The response of Ru/sup 106/ extraction to variations in the treatment of TBP-Amsco 125-82 solvent was tested. Two solvents have shown ability to extract cesium. The Numerical Solution of a Parabolic System of Differential Equations Arising in Shallow Water Theory (open access)

The Numerical Solution of a Parabolic System of Differential Equations Arising in Shallow Water Theory

"A finite difference approximation to a non-linear set of parabolic differential equations arising in shallow water theory is given. These difference equations were used to determine the shape and rate of propagation of a hum of fluid down a channel of constant depth. The hump of fluid was found to spread instead of steepen, as is the case in the usual shallow water theory."

Summary of Progress on the Study of Beta Treatment of Uranium, November 1, 1959-August 31, 1960 (open access)

Summary of Progress on the Study of Beta Treatment of Uranium, November 1, 1959-August 31, 1960

Variables affecting the texture and grain size of uranium during beta treatment are summarized. The study of the effect of time and temperature in the beta phase on the growth index (G3) and grain size of the final alpha product is tentatively believed to show that higher beta temperatures for short times (up to about seven minutes) tend to promote slightly more negative growth indices and that higher beta temperatures give rise to somewhat finer grain sizes. Results of studies of both Jominy end-quenched bars and several full-sized rods and tubes quenched by total immersion showed that large thermal gradients promoted negative growth indices and produced grains somewhat elongated in the direction of the thermal gradient. The effects of endcooling in full-sized pieces quenched by total immersion in cold water showed that the axial growth index is negative up to distances from the end of about half the wall thickness of tubes and about half the radial dimension of rods. The grain refinement penetrates to a lesser distance from the ends. In the radial direction the growth index for these same pieces is largely negative to a distance below the outer diameter of about midwall in two tubes studied. In …

Injury statistics as an aid in preventing accidents in metal and nonmetallic mines (open access)

Injury statistics as an aid in preventing accidents in metal and nonmetallic mines

Circular produced by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to promote safety through a series of reports on accident prevention in mines. According the the scope statement, "This first section of the revised series of circulars covers various phases of accident prevention at metal and nonmetallic mines. It presents compilations of statistical data on past accident experience, based on injuries resulting from accidents. This information shows how accident-injury records can be used in planning, executing, and measuring the effectiveness of accident-prevention programs" (p. 2).

SOME INFORMATION CONCERNING THE KEWB "B" WITH REGARD TO UCRL INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION

The use of KEWB-B as a calibration source for pulse detection instruments is proposed. As a result, more information was needed: radial and axial distributions of fissions, number of fissions seen by the detection instruments, and materials seen by the detection instruments. The calibrations were achieved in six transient runs. (T.R.H.)

Equilibrium Configuration of a Plasma in the Guiding Center Limit (open access)

Equilibrium Configuration of a Plasma in the Guiding Center Limit

"We compute the equilibrium configuration of a collision-free plasma contained in an axially symmetric magnetic field. The plasma is characterized by a non-scalar pressure tensor which is obtained from a microscopic distribution function in a form suggested b the guiding center approximation. The solution is calculated in the limit where the ratio of the width to the length of the plasma region and the ratio of the gas to the magnetic pressure are both small. Boundary values at the midplane as well as the shape of the plasma appear as arbitrary parameters in the solution. We give the solution to a corresponding scalar pressure problem for comparison."
