Tory II-C reactor cold critical assembly program

Declassified 27 Nov 1973. The cold critical experiments with the Tory II-C reactor were performed in the critical facility of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Livermore. The reactor is described briefly; the experimental equipment and the arrangement for the experiments is described in detail. The core poison was removed without difficulty, and criticality was achieved at 1624 hours July 14, 1965. With the design core configuration the shutdown margin was less than had been intended; criticality was attained at a shim rod bank position of 38.5 inches insertion rather than the expected 35 inches All Hastelloy tie tubes were replaced by Rene'-41. A heated core experiment with DELTA T = 129 plus or minus 7 deg F above room temperature provided a measure of the temperature coefficient which was found to be --3.9 x 10/sup -3/ plus or minus 7% inch of shim rod bank travel/ deg F. Other experiments included flux mapping, using fission foils, fission counters and copper flux wires, transients to determine control element worths, studies of flux spectrum by means of threshold detectors, and measurements of multiplication for various shutdown configurations for purposes of operational safety. GROW1: a crop growth model for assessing impacts of gaseous pollutants from geothermal technologies

A preliminary model of photosynthesis and growth of field crops was developed to assess the effects of gaseous pollutants, particularly airborne sulfur compounds, resulting from energy production from geothermal resources. The model simulates photosynthesis as a function of such variables as irradiance, CO/sub 2/ diffusion resistances, and internal biochemical processes. The model allocates the products of photosynthesis to structural (leaf, stem, root, and fruit) and storage compartments of the plant. The simulations encompass the entire growing season from germination to senescence. The model is described conceptually and mathematically and examples of model output are provided for various levels of pollutant stress. Also, future developments that would improve this preliminary model are outlined and its applications are discussed.

The basic purpose of the transition program in the operations area was to obtain a detailed understanding of the FMPC operations with emphasis on equipment and organization, Also considered in this evaluation were several extant conditions at FMPC which may have significant impact on initiatives adopted in the operations area. These conditions are as follows: capital expenditures over the last several years averaged less than 20% of what might be considered minimum to sustain such a facility in a good operating condition; the production load is ramping up placing greater demands on an old facility; the workforce is relatively inexperienced (68% with less than five (5) years) at FMPC; plans are in place to institute major upgrading of FMPC facilities; the RFP described the need for a major effort in the Environment, Safety and Health Area. Considering the above concerns, the transition program was focused in the following areas: Procedures - An inexperienced workforce operating in an atmosphere requiring rigid compliance with more rigorous environmental criteria necessitates clear, concise up-to-date procedures to enhance performance; Training - New equipment, new people and rigorous environmental constraints demand an aggressive, focused training program. This Engineering Report (Conceptual Design) addresses remediation of the plutonium-bearing solutions currently in inventory at the Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP). The recommendation from the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is that the solutions be treated thermally and stabilized as a solid for long term storage. For solutions which are not discardable, the baseline plan is to utilize a denitration process to stabilize the solutions prior to packaging for storage.

A Study of Complex Ions in Fused Salt Systems. Final Report

Absorption spectrophotometric methods were used in a study of complex ion formation and acid-base reactions in fused chloride and nitrate systems. Several methods for the treatment of spectrophotometric data were investigated. The spectra of various chromium salts were determined in three nitrate melts and in fused lithium chloride-pothssium chloride. In low solute concentrations in LiNO/sub 3/-KNO/sub 3/, NaNC/sub 3/-KNO/sub 3/, and LiCl-KCl melts, the species found was the chromate ion, while in molten AgNO/sub 3/, the species found was the dichromate ion. An explanation of these observations is put forward, and their significance discussed. Formation constants for leadchloro and lead-bromo complexes were evaluated. The values obtained for the first two lead-chloro and leadbromo complexes are 11.3, 3.6 and 13.3 and 6.0, respectively. Mass spectral studies of the gaseous products of the reaction between dichromate ion and nitrate ion in fused NaNO/sub 3/-KNO/sub 3/ showed that the reaction is of an acidbase type, involving formation of a nitronium ion which then reacts with nitrate ion to evolve dinitrogen pentoxide decomposition products. A number of qualitative experiments in fused salts involving acid-base reactions were performed, and their relation to oxidation-reduction processes in the fused salts is discussed. Model Documentation for the MiniCAM

The MiniCAM, short for the Mini-Climate Assessment Model, is an integrated assessment model of moderate complexity focused on energy and agriculture sectors. The model produces emissions of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) and other radiatively important substances such as sulfur dioxide. Through incorporation of the simple climate model MAGICC, the consequences of these emissions for climate change and sea-level rise can be examined. The MiniCAM is designed to be fast and flexible.

Transformation Kinetics of Plutonium. Part 1. A Study of the Beta to Alpha and Alpha to Beta Transformations

The transformation kinetics of alpha and beta plutoniunn were determined by using a fluid displacement technique. The rate of formation of the alpha phase from the beta phase was determined after beta heat treating and allowing the sample to transform isothermally in the alpha range. Isothermal reaction curves were obtained from --78 to +90 d C. A time- temperaturetransformation curve showed the maximum rate of transformation to be approximately --20 d C. The beta phase did not transform completely to the alpha when the transformation was allowed to take place isothermally. A relationship between the fraction untransformed beta and the transformation temperature has been established. Isothermal reaction curves and a time- temperature-transformation curve of the alpha at 200 deg C an - BETA transformation were obtained. Portions of the timetransformation curves of the BETA at 200 deg C an alpha transformation of four purities were plotted. The effects of beta heat treating times and temperatures were studied. Photomicrographs of a specimen having transformed from the beta to the alpha phase at different rates of transformation are presented. (auth)

In this report ten cases of acute radiation syndrome are described resulting from two accidents occurring at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory of unique nature involving fissionable material. These cases are described in considerable detail. The report comprises ten sections. This volume, part II of the report, is comprised of sections entitled: (1) the Biological Basis for the Clinical Response seen in the Acute radiation Syndrome, (2) Clinical Signs and Symptoms, (3) Discussion of Hematological Findings, (4) Chemistry of the Blood and Urine, (5) Discussion of Pathological Findings, and (6) Reconsiderations of the Calculated Radiation Doses in Terms of the Observed Biological Response of the Patients. This report was prepared primarily for the clinician who is interested in radiation injuries and therefore emphasis has been placed on the correlation of clinical and pathological changes with the type of cytogenetic change known to be produced by ionizing radiation.

Geothermal Energy for New Mexico: Assessment of Potential and Exploratory Drilling

This report summarizes the drilling operations and subsequent interpretation of thermal and geochemical data from the New Mexico Tech NMT-2GT (OSE RG- 05276 POD) test well. This slim hole was drilled along an elongate heat-flow anomaly at the base of the Socorro Mountains to better assess the geothermal resource potential (Socorro Peak geothermal system) on the western side of the New Mexico Tech campus in Socorro, New Mexico. The reservoir depth, hydraulic properties, temperature and chemistry were unknown prior to drilling. The purpose of the NMT-2GT (OSE RG-05276 POD) well was to explore the feasibility of providing geothermal fluids for a proposed district space heating system on the New Mexico Tech campus. With DOE cost over runs funds we completed NMT-2GT to a depth of 1102 feet at the Woods Tunnel drill site. Temperatures were nearly constant (41 oC ) between a depth of 400–1102 feet. Above this isothermal zone, a strong temperature gradient was observed (210 oC /km) beneath the water table consistent with vertical convective heat transfer. The existence of a groundwater upflow zone was further supported by measured vertical hydraulic head measurements which varied between about 258 feet at the water table to 155 feet at a …

Integrated Genome-Based Studies of Shewanella Ecophysiology

Integration of bioinformatics and experimental techniques was applied to mapping and characterization of the key components (pathways, enzymes, transporters, regulators) of the core metabolic machinery in Shewanella oneidensis and related species with main focus was on metabolic and regulatory pathways involved in utilization of various carbon and energy sources. Among the main accomplishments reflected in ten joint publications with other participants of Shewanella Federation are: (i) A systems-level reconstruction of carbohydrate utilization pathways in the genus of Shewanella (19 species). This analysis yielded reconstruction of 18 sugar utilization pathways including 10 novel pathway variants and prediction of > 60 novel protein families of enzymes, transporters and regulators involved in these pathways. Selected functional predictions were verified by focused biochemical and genetic experiments. Observed growth phenotypes were consistent with bioinformatic predictions providing strong validation of the technology and (ii) Global genomic reconstruction of transcriptional regulons in 16 Shewanella genomes. The inferred regulatory network includes 82 transcription factors, 8 riboswitches and 6 translational attenuators. Of those, 45 regulons were inferred directly from the genome context analysis, whereas others were propagated from previously characterized regulons in other species. Principles of X-ray Navigation

X-ray navigation is a new concept in satellite navigation in which orientation, position and time are measured by observing stellar emissions in x-ray wavelengths. X-ray navigation offers the opportunity for a single instrument to be used to measure these parameters autonomously. Furthermore, this concept is not limited to missions in close proximity to the earth. X-ray navigation can be used on a variety of missions from satellites in low earth orbit to spacecraft on interplanetary missions. In 1997 the Unconventional Stellar Aspect Experiment (USA) will be launched as part of the Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite (ARGOS). USA will provide the first platform for real-time experimentation in the field of x-ray navigation and also serves as an excellent case study for the design and manufacturing of space qualified systems in small, autonomous groups. Current techniques for determining the orientation of a satellite rely on observations of the earth, sun and stars in infrared, visible or ultraviolet wavelengths. It is possible to use x-ray imaging devices to provide arcsecond level measurement of attitude based on star patterns in the x-ray sky. This technique is explored with a simple simulation.
